Concrete Sealing Warragul

Local West Gippsland concreting specialists. Residential and rural jobs, free on-site quotes, quality finishes built to last.

Sealing is the final step in a decorative concrete job, and it is what brings out the colour, protects the surface and makes cleaning easy. We seal every exposed aggregate, stamped and coloured concrete surface we pour across Warragul and Baw Baw Shire, and we offer resealing and surface restoration for existing concrete that has lost its shine.

A quality sealer extends the life of a decorative concrete surface by protecting it from oil, food and organic stains, slowing water penetration and reducing UV fading. The right sealer, applied at the right interval, keeps your concrete looking sharp and performing well for years, and we can advise on the right product and schedule for your surface.

Why seal concrete

Concrete is a porous material, and without a sealer it absorbs water, oil and organic matter, which can stain the surface and slowly degrade the concrete. A sealer fills the pores and creates a protective barrier that stops stains from soaking in, makes cleaning easier and, for decorative finishes, brings out the colour and gives a wet-look or matte finish that enhances the appearance of the surface.

Sealing is especially important for decorative finishes like exposed aggregate and stamped concrete, where the colour and the texture are integral to the look. An unsealed decorative surface will look dull, be more prone to staining and weather faster. A sealed surface stays vivid, is easy to clean and resists the oil, food and organic stains that a driveway, patio or pool surround is exposed to every day.

Penetrating vs film-forming sealers

There are two main types of concrete sealer: penetrating and film-forming. A penetrating sealer soaks into the concrete and reacts with the pores, creating a water-repellent barrier below the surface that does not change the look or the texture of the concrete. Penetrating sealers are suited to plain concrete, driveways and surfaces where a natural look is wanted, and they do not make the surface slippery.

A film-forming sealer sits on top of the concrete and creates a protective film that can give a matte, satin or gloss finish. Film-forming sealers are suited to decorative finishes like exposed aggregate and stamped concrete, where they bring out the colour and give a wet-look sheen. They can be slippery on smooth surfaces, so we can add a non-slip additive where grip is a concern, especially on driveways and pool surrounds. We discuss the options during the free site visit and recommend the right sealer for your surface.

Exposed aggregate resealing

Exposed aggregate needs resealing every two to four years to keep the colour vivid and the surface protected. The reseal process is simple: we clean the surface thoroughly, let it dry, and apply a fresh coat of sealer. A properly resealed exposed aggregate surface looks like new, with the stones showing their natural colour and the surface protected against stains.

The resealing interval depends on the exposure and the traffic. A driveway in full sun with vehicle traffic may need resealing every two years, while a covered patio may last four years between seals. Signs that a surface needs resealing include a dull or faded appearance, water soaking in rather than beading on the surface, and stains that are harder to remove. We can assess your surface and advise on whether it is due for a reseal.

Acid wash and clean

Before resealing a decorative concrete surface, the surface has to be clean and free of stains, oil and efflorescence. An acid wash, using a diluted hydrochloric acid solution, removes surface staining, mineral deposits and efflorescence, and opens the pores of the concrete so the new sealer can bond properly. We apply the acid, scrub the surface, and neutralise and rinse it before letting it dry.

An acid wash is also used to clean exposed aggregate that has become dull or stained, restoring the natural colour of the stones before resealing. The acid removes the thin layer of cement paste and mineral deposit that builds up on the surface over time, giving a fresh, clean surface for the sealer to bond to. We handle the acid wash safely, with the right PPE and environmental controls, and we dispose of the waste responsibly.

Resurfacing old driveways

Resurfacing is an option for an old concrete driveway that is structurally sound but has a tired, stained or faded surface. A resurface involves applying a thin overlay of polymer-modified concrete or a decorative coating over the existing slab, giving a fresh, new surface without the cost of a full replacement. The overlay can be coloured, stamped or textured to give a decorative finish.

Resurfacing is not a fix for structural cracks, lifting or settling, as the overlay will follow the shape of the underlying slab. For a driveway with structural damage, a full replacement is the better option, and we can advise on which is right for your situation. A resurfaced driveway still needs sealing after the overlay is applied, and the same resealing schedule applies as for a new decorative surface.

How often to reseal

The resealing interval depends on the surface type, the exposure and the traffic. As a general guide, a decorative surface in full sun with vehicle traffic, such as an exposed aggregate driveway, should be resealed every two to three years. A covered or shaded surface, such as a stamped concrete patio under a roof, may last three to four years between seals. A plain concrete surface with a penetrating sealer may last longer.

The best way to tell if a surface needs resealing is the water bead test: if water beads on the surface, the sealer is still working; if water soaks in, it is time to reseal. Other signs include a dull or faded appearance, stains that are harder to remove, and a rougher texture. We can assess your surface and advise on whether it is due for a reseal, and we can carry out the reseal as a follow-up service.

Our process

Every sealing job starts with a free on-site assessment. We come to your property, look at the surface, assess the condition of the existing sealer, and recommend the right product and process. We clean the surface, using an acid wash if needed, let it dry, and apply the sealer with the right number of coats for the surface and the exposure. We advise on how long to wait before using the surface, typically a day for foot traffic and longer for vehicles.

For a new decorative surface, we seal it as part of the pour job, after the concrete has cured. For an existing surface, we assess the condition, clean and prepare it, and apply a fresh coat of sealer. We use quality sealers suited to the West Gippsland climate, and we can recommend a resealing schedule to keep your surface protected. We are local, so we are close by if you need a follow-up or a reseal in the future.

Concrete Sealing Warragul — Frequently Asked Questions

Resurfacing is a good idea if the driveway is structurally sound but has a tired or stained surface. A resurface gives a fresh, decorative finish without the cost of a full replacement. It is not suitable for driveways with structural cracks, lifting or settling, as the overlay will follow the underlying damage. We assess the driveway on site and advise on whether a resurface or a replacement is the right choice.
